Huevo
'Huevo' creates a field of tension between opposites. On the one hand, the perfectly harmonious egg shape, based on the mathematical equation of the egg; on the other, the complex, technical, interlocking structure of 36 oval steel sheets. Tranquillity, fragility, security and the origin of life are juxtaposed with a massive, unsettling construction reminiscent of a medieval cage from which there is no escape.
The work was developed using a self-written algorithm in the 3D programme Grasshopper/Rhino. The individual sheet metal parts were then cut to size and the connecting slots individually filed to size to achieve the best possible fit. The individual oval halves were then welded together and sanded. However, all the joints between the layers of sheet metal are only interlocked, not welded, so that the structure holds itself together in the end. The surface was then oxidised and lightly sanded.
